Personal Appearance, Body Language and Behaviour of Your Staff

Put your best face forward!

The appearance, behaviour and body language of your staff is incredibly important at shows and exhibits for one simple reason- your staff and your organisation are one and the same to any visitor. Any assumptions a visitor makes about a staff member will be applied to your company too. Exhibitors that spend thousands of dollars on displays should also pay attention to the appearance of the staff. Having approachable staff will increase your sales!

Behaviour:

  • Train your staff and set clear expectations and goals before the event. Clear communication is vital to maintain the company image.
  • It is important to avoid using a mobile phone, even if there are no visitors in the booth. It makes staff seem uninterested and unapproachable.
  • If there is more than one person working, spread out. It’s much easier for customers to approach one person and engage in conversation.
  • Staff should avoid conversing between each other during a show. While of course staff who appear to be chatting, laughing and getting along create a welcoming and happy atmosphere, visitors may be hesitant to interrupt or approach staff who are deep in conversation.
  • Swearing and offensive language and gestures should obviously not be permitted.

Body Language:

  • Staff should not cross their arms across their chest. This makes them appear unapproachable and uninterested.
  • Eye contact should be made with every visitor where possible. This establishes trust with a potential customer and is the first step to forming a bond.
  • Every visitor should also be greeted with a smile. Staff should make an effort to smile at each other and have a happy look on their face even when there is no one at your stall.
  • Ensure staff have good posture and are keeping their hands out of pockets. This will show that they are alert and ready to engage in conversation.
  • Staff should never be seen leaning or sitting. This gives the impression of laziness and disinterest.

Personal Appearance:

  • Hair should be neat, clean and tied back. This is especially important if working with food.
  • Nails should be clean and trimmed. Any nail polish should be free of chips, and a conservative colour.
  • Any jewellery or accessories should be understated and conservative.
  • Clothes and aprons should be clean and ironed.

Always keep in mind that your staff are the face of your company and that first impressions last!
